The cars I could have had in may alternate dimensions.
the First was my Dad’s 1991 Ranger Sport, or SXT. it was a 4 cylinder, manual, 2wd. It was black with pick and blue graphics. like this but black, and lower. It was supposed to be my fist car, but we ended up selling it to pay for a two week trip to Maine. I still wish I had gotten this truck as it was really cool looking. I wanted to lower it, and put in a Turbo T bird engine.
The second is/was a White e34 540i . The first time I ever actually went car shopping with my Dad this was the only car that caught my eye. it was at a shady used dealer, and no doubt would have been a huge mistake. My Camry was a far better first car.
Third an 83 Escort 4 door hatch. An older couple that my Dad k new were getting rid of this car they’d had sitting around as they only used their Minivan because it was easier to get into. It was red and sliver two tone which I actually really liked. And i thought it was just the right amount of ugly. It was automatic, and boring but it had a sunroof! and red interior that I loved. I test drove it, my Dad agreed on a price, I think it was 1200 bucks, and then they traded it in...
there was a purple 93 Talon TSI I wanted, but the money was never there, then a White 2000 DeVille, that I ruled out as soon as I drove it. The next one that I really let get away was an 81 Celica Supra. This was while I was looking for replacement for my 91 Civic, after it was totaled. I went to the twin cities for a weekend with 2200 bucks in hand determined to but a car. I looked at a modified(slammed) 91 Jetta GLI, which I didn’t like, and the next day I was supposed to look at this beat up 1200 dollar 81 Surpa. However that night I found a 97 Acura GSR for ,and I ended up buying that instead, and it was the stupidest car purchase I’ve ever made. Mostly because I didn’t ever go look at the Supra, it looked rough, but now I’ll never kn ow how good, or bad it was because I didn’t go look at it.
A few years down the road. i was unemployed, and paying for a 2001 Civic coupe that i had bought the previous summer, and what shows up in my town? A 70,000 mile 2003 Civic Si for 5500 bucks. a STEAL infact it was the same amount I’d paid for my 100,000 mile coupe.. . I got to at least sit in it, and it felt amazing, but not having steady income, and having to roll over debt with the coupe, I couldn’t justify the purchase. About a month later I did find a job but the car was long gone by then.
2 years after that, i had a little over 4 grand burning a whole in my pocket after finally selling the 01 coupe, and saving up some money on top of that. I wanted to buy something older, faster, and more challenging to work on and drive, than anything I’d owned previously. As most of you know I bought my Galant VR-4. but before that I test drove an 87 Chrysler Conquest. It was incredible. The turbo whooshes, the 80s wedge shape, those fender flares, the seat belts that said TURBO TURBO TURBO. I wanted it BAD. The seller wanted 4k for it and it was a very reasonable price. but I didn’t want to end up driving this car in the winter, and my wife didn’t want me to have two cars, so keeping her Cavalier for a winter beater wasn’t an option. I should have just bought it. I still want to own one eventually
Oh after the Conquest i tried to by an E30. an 89 325 is coupe no less. I showed up just after it sold, even offered the new owner 20 0 buc ks more than he paid for it. To which he replied “no way I’ve been looking for this car for a long time and i cant believe I got it this cheap.” it sold for 2000 bucks.
the most resent “one that got away” was an 86 CRX Si. I actually made a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about this car back in September of ‘ 16. I decided I was tired of working on the Galant, and wanted to go back to the simple life of owning a Honda. And I found this gem, for only 1900 bucks. I made arrangements to look at it. the seller and I agreed on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. at 1:30 he texted me “sold the CRX”. I’m not even going to lie, I cried. in fact I’m tearing up thinking about it now. the definition of Heartbreak. I have to thank my amazing wife for putting up with me, because I was a whiny asshole the rest of the day. This was more gut wrenching than any high school rejection. On the upside I did finally fix the problem that was ruining the Galant fro me. It would occasionally hit a fuel cut at 3500RPM so my AWD Turbo monster couldn’t accelerate . Turned out to just be the throttle position sensor. Much snow hooning was had after that problem was fixed.
